Momentum over perfection
With the global economy in its current state (hello, cost of living crisis), developing extra income streams isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.
I wish it weren’t the case, but as I’ve said before; you have to meet reality where it is, not where you’d prefer it to be.
Entrepreneurship today isn’t always about dreams or passion projects. It’s often born from one simple truth: what you have isn’t enough, and you need to make it work.
This isn’t just a business strategy—it’s survival.
Learning by Doing
I didn’t grow up wealthy. We had food on the table, but if I wanted anything extra—a hobby, an experience—I had to figure it out myself. My parents, despite doing well now, still carry a scarcity mindset. They’ve always held onto what they have out of fear of losing it, and that meant no safety nets for me.
Looking back, that taught me to depend on myself, find solutions, and turn necessity into opportunity. Over the years, I’ve made money in countless ways:
I’ve worked as a language translator, yoga teacher, movie theater attendant, construction worker, social media manager, and even a Bat Mitzvah breakdancer (don’t ask).
None of these were passion projects—they were what I thought I needed to do at the time because I was desperate.
Each taught me something valuable about humans (I think everyone should work in customer service – the world would be a much nicer place!) but I really wish someone had told me that none of these things were going to lead me into ”a career”.
Do the Thing
Something that got drilled into my head during yoga teacher training was that if you want to master a challenging pose, you don’t get good by practicing other poses—you do the pose you want to get good at.
You do them in stages, with blocks and chairs to assist you to build up the right muscles. But you do the pose.
Entrepreneurship works the same way. Want to get better at creating income streams online? Create income streams online. Stop doing jobs that aren’t related to this, and stop waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect skillset.
Start doing the thing.
When doubt creeps in (Who am I to do this? What if I fail?), I remind myself:
If not me, then who? If not now, then when?
No one is better than you and no one knows what they’re doing.
We’re all special. And that means no one is special. Neat huh?
The only difference between most of us is that is that some choose to figure it out as they go, some think that “it will come in time”.
There’s no perfect time or perfect person for anything.
Entrepreneurship isn’t about being fearless—it’s about acting in spite of fear.
Start Now
If you’re feeling stuck right now, here’s how to take the first step:
- Look at what you love to do: Write a list of everything you’re passionate about—even the nerdiest, most niche interests. Whether it’s gaming, knitting, analyzing obscure data, or designing spreadsheets, there’s an audience for almost anything.
- Pick one thing you can share or offer: Not every passion needs to be commodified—some should remain sacred, just for you. But chances are, there’s something on your list that you can monetize without losing your love for it. Start with the easiest (but focused) way to turn that passion into value for others, whether it’s teaching, creating, or solving a specific problem.
- Take action today: Create a free website, start a social media account, or reach out to (or start) a community that shares your interest. Show how your passion can help or inspire others, and put yourself out there.
The goal isn’t perfection—it’s momentum. You don’t have to monetize everything you love, but there’s undoubtedly something you can transform into an income stream.
The best way to get there? Start doing the thing.
