Momentum over perfection

With the global economy doing what it’s doing, building extra income streams isn’t optional anymore. I wish it were. But you have to meet reality where it is, not where you’d prefer it to be.
Entrepreneurship today isn’t always about dreams or passion projects. Sometimes it’s just about making the numbers work. That’s not a romantic framing but it’s an honest one.
I didn’t grow up wealthy. We had food on the table, but if I wanted anything beyond that, I had to figure it out myself. My parents still carry a scarcity mindset despite doing well now, which meant no safety nets for me growing up. Looking back, that was a gift I didn’t recognise at the time. It taught me to depend on myself, find solutions, and turn necessity into opportunity.
Over the years I’ve made money in more ways than I can easily explain. Language translator, yoga teacher, movie theater attendant, construction worker, social media manager, and yes, a Bat Mitzvah breakdancer. None of these were passion projects. They were what I needed to do because I was desperate. Each one taught me something valuable about people, but I really wish someone had told me earlier that none of them were going to lead anywhere on their own.
Something that got drilled into me during yoga teacher training was this: if you want to master a challenging pose, you don’t get good at it by practicing other poses. You do the pose. In stages, with support, building the right muscles. But you do the pose.
Entrepreneurship works the same way. Want to build income streams online? Build income streams online. Stop doing unrelated jobs hoping the skills will transfer. Stop waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect skillset. Neither is coming.
When doubt creeps in, and it will, I come back to two questions. If not me, then who? If not now, then when?
Nobody knows what they’re doing. We’re all figuring it out as we go. The only difference between people who build things and people who don’t is that the ones who build things started before they were ready.
There’s no perfect time. There’s no perfect person. Entrepreneurship isn’t about being fearless. It’s about acting in spite of fear.
If you’re feeling stuck, the move is simple even if it isn’t easy. Write down everything you’re good at or genuinely interested in, including the niche and nerdy stuff. Pick one thing someone else would find useful. Find the simplest possible way to offer it. Then do that today, not next week.
Create the website. Start the account. Reach out to the community. Put something real into the world.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s momentum. And the only way to get momentum is to start doing the thing.
